The SOMATEC UW-E is an automatic turret unwinder for uninterrupted material feeding in converting lines. During operation, the next roll is prepared while the current one is being unwound — the overlap splice at full production speed ensures non-stop operation of your line. The compact design with winding shaft support enables space-saving integration, while precise web tension control reliably processes even sensitive and stretchable materials.

Applications

The SOMATEC UW-E processes virtually all web-based materials in converting, coating and lamination lines. The winding shaft support and compact design make it the versatile standard solution for material feeding.

Film converting — Packaging films, shrink films, technical films and barrier films
Nonwoven processing — Nonwovens for hygiene, medical and filtration products
Paper and board processing — Coating, lamination and printing lines
Adhesive tape industry — Feeding of tape substrates, release liners and self-adhesive webs
Flooring production — PVC flooring (LVT, vinyl), carrier webs and decorative films
Artificial leather production — PVC and PU artificial leather webs
Technical textiles — Geotextiles, filter materials and coated textiles
Roofing membranes & construction films — Bitumen sheets, vapor barriers and sealing films

Why the UW-E?

Robust construction, sophisticated roll change systems and perfect control make the SOMATEC UW-E an absolutely process-reliable component. As a compact turret unwinder with winding shaft support, it is a cost-effective base machine that can be equipped with additional optional function units. When using winding shafts, roll loading from floor or pallet is possible via lifting arms arranged in the unwinder. Permanent shaft aeration for higher process reliability and ultra-light CFRP winding shafts for ergonomic setup are optionally available.

Typical Configurations

Converting line: UW-E unwinder + SOMATEC ATW-E winder with splice synchronization for loss-free non-stop operation
Coating and lamination line: UW-E with lifting arms for roll loading from floor or pallet, lifting table and cart for roll loading
Sensitive materials: UW-E with permanent shaft aeration and CFRP winding shafts for higher process reliability and ergonomic setup

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a turret unwinder? — A turret unwinder is a machine that feeds material rolls automatically and without interruption into the production process. While one roll is being unwound, the next can already be prepared. The changeover happens on-the-fly, without stopping the line — essential for continuous converting processes.
When do I need a turret unwinder instead of a simple unwinder? — Whenever your production line must run continuously without stopping for each roll change. Typical in coating, lamination and printing processes, where a stop causes scrap, web breaks or quality issues. At line speeds above 50 m/min a turret unwinder is practically mandatory.
What materials can the UW-E process? — The SOMATEC UW-E processes virtually all converting materials, such as films, paper, nonwovens, technical textiles, flooring (LVT/vinyl), artificial leather and coated webs. The tension level is precisely controllable throughout the entire unwind — even with sensitive or stretchable materials.
How does the UW-E differ from the UW-C and UW-S? — The three variants are optimized for different application profiles: UW-E for electric drives with maximum flexibility, UW-C for compact installation situations, UW-S for heavy rolls and high web tensions. The right choice depends on material, roll weight and line speed.
How does the consultation work the selection of the right unwinder? — SOMATEC analyzes your requirements for web tension, speed and material handling together with you and recommends the optimal configuration. From requirements analysis to commissioning.
Can an existing unwinder be retrofitted to a turret unwinder? — In principle yes — SOMATEC offers retrofit solutions. SOMATEC assesses the asset condition and technical feasibility and develops the upgrade concept. Often a retrofit is more economical than a new purchase.
